During stress/extreme stressful moments the sympathetic nervous system may kick in with what research studies may refer to as "fight, flight, freeze" "faint or fawn", some methods people have used to in effort to re-engage the parasympathetic nervous system in effort to begin to experience a more relaxed feeling have included breathing techniques, relaxing muscles, or even humor as in thinking about something funny.
